Establishment of the Department of Physics

When the Faculty of Education was set up in the summer of 1990, the Department of Physics was one of the Faculty’s founding departments. A separate Department of Physics had been established in 1962.

After 1990 and the arrival of new staff, there were significant developments at the Department of Physics. Grants were successfully awarded and the department staff had been involved in a number of domestic and international projects in the field of piezoelectricity, optics, acoustics and optical methods for particle detection at CERN. At the same time, publishing activities began to develop significantly. Over the past 30 years, the department’s members have published over 300 papers in international journals, two books and several chapters in coauthored books. In 2004 and 2007, staff at the Department of Physics organized two international conferences in the field of piezoelectricity and ferroelectrics. Our specialized scientific workplaces - the Piezolaboratory and the Laser Interferometry Laboratory - are used to conduct experiments and educate our PhD students. The Department of Physics has keen contacts with a whole host of foreign departments. K. Vokurka collaborates with the Acoustics Institute of the Centre for National Research (CNR) in Rome, Italy in the field of physical acoustics, M. Šulc and Š. Kunc regularly visit the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. Colleagues from collaborating institutions in Poland, France, Italy, etc. regularly visit the Department of Physics.
