Establishment of the Department of Czech Language and Literature

The Department of Czech Language and Literature was set up as an independent department in 1992. Right from the start, the department’s members focused their scientific research activities on regional issues.

The Department of Czech Language and Literature has been organizing professional conferences since 1994. In cooperation with the Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS, a series of international conferences entitled Termina were held in 1994, 1996, 2000 and 2003. These were devoted to professional style and issues of terminology. In 1995 and 1997, seminars were held on the theme of Contemporary Literature for Children and Youth. The tradition was later renewed in 2004 in cooperation with the Regional Research Library. Since then, the Contemporary Literature for Children and Youth conference has found firm footings and is held annually as part of the Children's Book Fair. In 2004 the Termina conference tied in with the Eurolingua professional meeting, and subsequent conferences were held in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 under the name Eurolingua & Eurolitteraria.

The department's staff take part in a number of scientific research projects, most recently the projects The Czech-Saxon Literary Landscape, Access to the Czech Radio Archive and Modern Czech Grammar. Students can also take part in the scientific research activities, primarily in the form of the Student Grant Competition; in the past years, the department’s students and staff have carried out projects such as Toponyms in the Landscape: Their Structure and Changes or Language Stereotypes from the School Environment. Every year the department also organizes lectures by prominent Czech and foreign linguists and literary scholars. In September 2016, the Department organized the conference Linguistics and Literary Science: paths and perspectives, which was attended by more than 60 experts from home and abroad.
