The newly established "Department of the National School" concentrated its professional team mainly in the field of artistic pursuits and the Czech language. The founder and the first head of the department was Assoc. PaedDr. Olga Roztočilová, CSc.
At present, the department oversees the master's degree in Teaching for Primary School Level 1 and the bachelor's degree in Teaching for Nursery Schools. Our students are prepared by a stable team of academic staff who are engaged in scientific, creative and artistic activities in the fields of language, literature, science, environment, music, art and drama education.
The department works closely with other professional departments, above all pedagogy and psychology, mathematics, physical education, foreign languages and the department of pedagogical practice. In accordance with the department’s broader focus, an emphasis is placed on connecting individual disciplines with the practical side of cognition. There is excellent cooperation with teachers from practice, who are particularly involved in the didactics of the subjects.
The department’s staff are researchers and members of many national and international projects, they organize lectures and seminars for the public, concerts, team and individual exhibitions, and have established a successful website focused on art. We are proud of our own Lanovka edition, which uses subject-oriented publications to bring students closer to finding out about individual disciplines in an interesting and unconventional manner.
Part of the department's well-knit team of teachers includes students who are exceptional in their emotional and social intelligence, empathy, creativity, inventiveness and didactic skills. We fully identify with Socrates' words that “education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel”. It is in this spirit that we endeavour to guide our students who will one day guide their own students.
